My Rifle, My Pony and Me
And here I was thinking that independent Irish folk pop had forgotten Dean Martin! This delicious cover of the King of Cool’s ‘My Rifle, My Pony And Me’ comes from Clare/Donegal outfit Hidden Highways, an exciting new pairing of smoky folk singer Carol Anne McGowan and ukulele-loving troubadour Vertigo Smyth. The original song, which western fans will recognise from Dino’s 1959 flick with John Wayne, Rio Bravo (worry ye not, it wasn’t a duet back then…), is given a breezy new lease of life from these two self-confessed reverb junkies. The result is soft, sweet, and a perfect teaser for Hidden Highways’ debut album, which is due out in the new year. Nab it for free at the link below.
