Morrissey sells late mother's Cork holiday home for €575,000

Former Smiths frontman Morrissey has reportedly sold his €575,000 home in Cobh, Co. Cork. Originally, the English singer-songwriter bought the gorgeous property as a holiday home for his late beloved mother, Elizabeth Anne Dwyer, in 2002. After her death in August 2020, the artist put the house (The Manse) up for sale.

Elizabeth, an Irish woman born in Dublin, emigrated to the UK in the 1950s. She gave birth to the Mancunian crooner in 1959. The close relationship he had with his mom has been well documented over the years. In a message shared on MorrisseyCentral following her death in 2020, she is described as his "best friend."

His mother's holiday home in Cobh was in a location she loved and admired, but it was also close to Morrissey. His song 'Irish Blood, English Heart' acknowledged this.

It's unclear why they chose Cork, but it's possible they were drawn in by The Manse's Victorian beauty and prime location on a ridge overlooking the harbour. It also has spectacular views and the seclusion that celebrities crave.

The 2,500 square ft house still needs a renovation, which is reflected in the guide price. Selling agents Gillian McDonnell and Ann O'Mahony of Sherry FitzGerald have set the price at €575,000, which seems reasonable for a period home on 0.6 acres of expertly tended gardens, with a feature pond and very large patio, and a leafy pathway that leads to a right-of-way down to the High Road and into Cobh town.

The retailer agents believe the house will appeal to families, “maybe relocators, returning from the UK”. It could also attract a local buyer with knowledge of the area who is looking to upgrade, the agents say. It is also possible that a Morrissey fan will buy the house for obvious reasons.
