Midnight City
A star is reborn
Having gone all '80s and self-reflective for 2008’s excellent Saturdays = Youth, the über-talented Anthony Gonzalez finally returns with a taste of forthcoming double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. ‘Midnight City’ starts as it means to go on with an attention-seeking and oddly terrifying (in the best possible way) synth that dominates proceedings, only letting up for a couple of breathy verses, before crashing back in to deliver one of the most infectious and sky-scraping choruses of the summer. As expected, the production is absolutely huge and just when you think things can’t get any bigger, along comes a rollicking saxophone solo that the late, great Clarence Clemons would be proud of. While there is admittedly a sense of hangover from the last album, this is synth-pop perfection.
