Miami Showband radio documentary to air tomorrow
After The Musiclooks at massacre through the eyes of Fran O'Toole's daughters
This July marked 40 years since the Miami Showband Massacre, when five people were killed - including three members of Ireland’s most popular cabaret band, The Miami Showband - in a paramilitary attack by the UVF in Co. Down.
Tomorrow, an RTE Radio 1 documentary tells the story of one of the victims, Miami Showband member Fran O’Toole (pictured above), through the eyes of his now-adult daughters, Rachel and Kelly.
The pair, who moved to Canada following their father's death, were too young to fully comprehend the situation. Now, they search for a connection to the man, and wonder what the future held for him, both as a musician and as a person.
It was hard not to be reminded of the Miami Showband story last month, following the horrific scenes at Le Bataclan in Paris. Indeed, surviving member Des Lee took issue with Bono describing the November 13 attacks as "the first direct hit on music," and failing to acknowledge the horrors of that day in 1975.
After The Music: The Daughters’ Story is a story of loss and discovery, produced by award-winning Susan McKay; it airs at 2pm tomorrow afternoon.
