Meanwhile, Back At The Disco
The Freaks seem hellbent on making willfully obscure house music that you think no-one really listens to.
The frustrating Freaks return with their second album and a fairly mini one at that. Frustrating? Well, y’see, the Freaks seem hellbent on making willfully obscure house music that you think no-one really listens to. Witness the self-indulgent mid-tempo noodle of ‘Electric Imbalance’ (the dullest album opener hotpress has heard in some time) or the pointless plod of ‘Fly With Me (Pt 1)’ and try to imagine ever listenig to ‘em again. Still, where it does work, it works well – check the simple, sunny ‘Happy Jus’ To See You Again’, the jerky quirk-funk of ‘Things Just Ain’t The Same’ or the excellent Telex-inspired ‘Can We Freak It’ for proof they can do it when they want to. If only they’d do it more often.
