Margo Price and Joan Baez team up for cover of 'Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)'
The cover arrives ahead of Price's protest mixtape Days Of Unrest, out July 3.
American singer-songwriter Margo Price has released a new cover of Woody Guthrie's 'Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)', featuring folk icon Joan Baez and the Memphis Mariachi.
The track is one of two songs released ahead of Price's forthcoming protest mixtape Days Of Unrest, which arrives on July 3. Also out now is her rendition of Blaze Foley's 'Oval Room', a song originally written in 1984 during Ronald Reagan's presidency.
Price's version of 'Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)' revisits Guthrie's classic tribute to the 28 Mexican migrant workers who died in a 1948 plane crash near Los Gatos Canyon, California. The song has since become one of the defining works of the American protest music tradition.
It is also well known to Irish audiences through Christy Moore's interpretation, while Hot Press previously described it as "a powerful work that is still ragingly relevant."
Explaining the new recording, Price said she has been performing 'Deportee' for a "couple of decades now".
"I first heard it when I was watching Joan Baez and Bob Dylan sing it on The Rolling Thunder Review," she said. "Joan Baez has inspired me beyond words, so to have her voice on this recording feels surreal."
Speaking on her cover of 'Oval Room', Price explained how "Covering this song, as well as the other tracks on Days Of Unrest, is how I protest."
The release follows a widely publicised performance at the Newport Folk Festival last year, where Price introduced the song after telling the audience, "F**k ICE." The moment sparked widespread debate online, but reflected the outspoken political stance that has become a hallmark of her career.
Alongside the two covers, Days Of Unrest will feature interpretations of Bob Dylan's 'Maggie's Farm', Charlie Daniels' 'Long Haired Country Girl', the traditional folk song 'De Colores', and original material, including 'Can't Stand Still' and the three-part instrumental suite 'San Marcos'.
