Man Booker and Pulitzer Prize winners on International Dublin Literary Award shortlist
Academy Street debutant Mary Costello flies the Irish flag, but will face tough competition from the likes of Marlon James and Marilynne Robinson in chasing the world's most lucrative prize
The shortlist for the International Dublin Literary Award – formerly known as the Impac award – has been unveiled.
There's heavy hitters on the list, including Marlon James (pictured). His A Brief History of Seven Killings, set around the attempted assassination of Bob Marley, was honoured with the Man Booker Prize in 2015. Also on the shortlist is Marilynne Robinson, whose Lila is the third book of a trilogy that already earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 2005.
Irish hopes rest with Mary Costello, whose debut novel Academy Street is the only homegrown effort on the shortlist. Three American authors – Dave Eggers for Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?, Akhil Sharma for Family Life, and Jenny Offill for Dept of Speculation – are in the running, along with writers from Spain (Outlaws Javier Cercas), Germany (The End of Days, Jenny Erpenbeck), Brazil (Diary of the Fall, Michel Laub) and Rwanda (Our Lady of the Nile, Scholastique Mukasonga)
The prize, the world’s most lucrative for a single novel in any language published in English, will be adjudicated by a five-member international panel, chaired by former US court of appeals chief judge Eugene R Sullivan – who should be good at keeping the peace should things get heated!
€100,000 will be awarded to the winner, who will be announced by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní Dhálaigh at a ceremony on June 9.
