Lost Recordings: The Collection
You’ve got to have sympathy for Steve Bicknell, who always gets categorised as a minimal techno artist.
You’ve got to have sympathy for Steve Bicknell, who always gets categorised as a minimal techno artist.
However, Bicknell’s music sounds nothing like the sub-Hood fodder that often trades as techno, and his first album proves that he’s capable of making timeless dancefloor music.
Dedicated to the Red Room at Lost, the long running, seminal club Steve and his partner Sheree promote, The Collection will give those unlucky enough not to have attended the night an insight into its sound.
Looped, tribal rhythms prevail here, underpinning acid tinged, deep panning grooves. Intense without ever descending into soulless banging territories, The Collection isn’t the kind of music you can do the ironing to and for that reason alone it’s hard to see it gaining acceptance outside a specialist market.
However, if you’re looking for proof of UK techno’s good health, then get a copy of The Collection.
