Lazer Proof
DANCE DUO DELIVER INSPIRED MASH-UP OF MIXTAPE TUNES AND LA ROUX'S VOCALS
Lazer Proof is the brainchild of groove technicians Diplo and Switch, who decided to put together a mixtape while in Jamaica working on their next album. Drawing on a mix of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and electro, they have assembled an irresistible musical package, and topped it off with the vocals of UK pop vixen La Roux.
The mix is notable for its eclecticism, veering from dance-friendly stompers to more melancholy, laidback fare. In the latter category, the pared-down, piano and strings version of 'Bulletproof' brings the essentially plaintive nature of the songs to the fore, and proves to be a startlingly imaginative reworking of a familiar hit. Elsewhere, the barnstorming versions of ‘In For The Kill’ and 'Fascination' find Major Lazer kicking out the jams in exhilarating fashion.
An unusual project, certainly, but an inspired one.
