Some of the biggest names in Americana will descend on the Marble City this weekend for the 17th annual Kilkenny Roots Festival.
Headliners this year include The Webb Sisters, John Doe, Mark Mulcahy, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, Hamell on Trial and Sturgill Simpson. Also included on the bill are Irish songwriting legend Jimmy McCarthy, former Jubilee All Star, Barry McCormack and Cork six-piece John Blek & The Rats. Taking place in venues of all shapes and sizes, including pubs, theatres and hotels around Kilkenny City, the festival runs from Friday ‘till Monday with over 20 ticketed shows and a free Music Trail offering over 60 gigs.
Over the years Kilkenny Roots has become renowned for “discovering” new acts in the hugely popular Americana genre and has hosted some of the earliest Irish gigs from the likes of Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Adams and Calexico among others. Notable recent appearances at the festival have included, Alabama Shakes, Drive By Truckers and Richmond Fontaine’s Willy Vlautin, who has appeared at Kilkenny Roots several times, both solo and with his band Richmond Fontaine.
