For the most part, it's brilliant and bewilderingly expansive
Eight Miles High is Roman Flugel - one half of German experimentalists Alter Ego and Sensorama. A good start. And The Byrds sample at the start of ‘Eight Miles High’ is an even better start. And just like most of The Byrds’ recorded output, this album’s a trip. It’s a whopping 17-track collection of some of his output recorded under his Eight Miles High moniker of the past few years, and, for the most part, it’s brilliant and bewilderingly expansive. ‘Flowchart’ sounds like Squarepusher taking a detour via Basic Channel’s studio, ‘Things That Keep You Warm’ combines intricate drum patterns and haunting chords perfectly, while ‘In This Place’ sounds like a drunk big band gone bananas in an electronic jazz bar. And that’s only three songs! Homogenous it ain’t – a work of genius from an under-rated maverick it is.
