Best Before Death was five arduous but fun years in the making...
Irish director Paul Duane has completed the shooting of a major documentary on Bill Drummond, the Scottish musician, artist and provocateur who (in)famously burned £1 million of the money he made from routinely topping the charts with the KLF.
"Six years ago I wrote Bill Drummond an email, asking him if he’d be interested in meeting me to discuss making a documentary about his work," Duane reports. "Tonight we wrapped on Best Before Death. I can confirm that spending five years developing a documentary about Bill Drummond then shooting it in four weeks is an excellent use of one’s time.
"And after we wrapped we had a nice chat about why the Stone Poneys’ version of 'Different Drum' is so much better than Mike Nesmith’s. Making documentaries has damaged my health and depleted my finances but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t had a lot of fun."
After a spell working on smash hit TV shows like Casualty and Ballykissangel, Duane has written and directed such well received films as Very Extremely Dangerous, Barbaric Genius and In A House That Ceased To Be.
