Insides
Coldplay collaborator surprises with way out-there experimentalism that keeps the electronica genre looking forward by ironically looking at the past.
Anyone who recognises Hopkins’ name from Coldplay’s Viva La Vida (the classically trained Londoner co-produced the album alongside Brian Eno) might be a little shocked when they hear Insides. To say that Hopkins’ solo work shares little with Chris Martin’s stadium swelling vision is an understatement as Insides is a sprawling mix of electronic and classical themes which are complex, diverse and at times even a little gothic. Certainly not for the more mainstream music fan, the album is a daring, imaginative piece of work that helps keep the electronica genre looking forward by ironically looking at the past.
