In the chart
U2 made another piece of history last week by occupying no fewer than twelve of the berths in the Irish top 60
Spurred on by their two Slane sell-outs, All That You Can’t Leave Behind fought off stiff competition from Slipknot to hang on to the top spot, The Joshua Tree was at 5, The Best Of 1980…1990 @ 10, Achtung Baby @ 11, Rattle And Hum @ 17, The Unforgettable Fire @ 33, Zooropa @ 35, Pop @ 37, War @ 40, Under A Blood Red Sky @ 43, Boy @ 45 and October @ No. 60.
All it needs now is for the Passengers O.S.T. to chart and, bingo, full house!
Far from being an anti-climax, the second Slane show turned into another massive celebration, with Bono thanking the Irish footie team for being “the best support act we’ve ever had.” You can read a full touchline report on page 8.
Meanwhile, Bono has masterminded the recording of a new version of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’.
Due on December 1st to coincide with World AIDS Day, the ‘We Are The World’-style project was assembled in New York in the run-up to the MTV Video Music Awards.
"In one corner of the recording studio, Irish rocker Bono quietly talked with rapper Ja Rule and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child," reports USA Today’s man in the studio. "Standing at the control board, producer Jermaine Dupri, known for his collaborations with Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, listened as Wyclef Jean worked out a guitar solo. Sitting on a chair to one side, Nona Gaye watched as a young generation of pop stars – drawn in large part by Bono’s passion and by the organisational efforts of longtime British activist Leigh Blake – came together to record a new version of her father’s classic protest song."
Commenting afterwards, Bono said: "We want to take this issue to the everyday American. To the shopping malls. To the high school kids."
Talking of the good old US of A, U2 kick off the third leg of their Elevation World Tour in Notre Dame, Indiana on October 10th and then take in Montreal (12th); Hamilton (13th); Chicago (15th); Baltimore (19th); New York (24th); Providence (30th); Philadelphia (November 2nd); Austin, Texas (5th); Denver (7th); Salt Lake City (9th); Los Angeles (12th); Oakland (15th); Las Vegas (18th); and Los Angeles (19th).
