In Ghostlike Fading
Brooklyn band make fun but flawed debut.
Boasting a veritable melting pot of styles and sounds that range from country, American college rock, indie and (whisper it) prog, Brooklyn natives My Best Friend have been making waves in all the right circles recently and In Ghostlike Fading is their debut record. Adopting that full and tension-fraught sound that was popularised by Pink Floyd, much of the material on the record is heavily indebted to Waters, Gilmore & Co. and ‘Odvip’ in particular is like a love letter to the revered English musos. Elsewhere, ‘Jesus Christ’ showcases a decidedly country-ish twang while ‘I’m Not Going Anywhere’ borrows a little from Spiritualized’s bombastic songbook. Not quite the revelation some were originally expecting, In Ghostlike Fading is an enjoyable record. Nothing wrong with that...
