Hozier’s debut album has stormed Ireland's Album Charts and is now sitting pretty in pole position, trumping sales figures for the likes of Ed Sheeran along the way.
Hozier, the current Hot Press cover star and wildly popular Wicklow bluesman, has jumped straight to the top of the Irish Album Charts in just his first week in the running.
Huge success was predicted for the 'Take Me To Church' singer's LP; Hozier has been busy garnering a serious following at home and abroad after appearances on Ellen, Letterman and more recently Jools Holland, not to mention a string of hit single and EP releases.
Today's news is quite remarkable, however: Hozier is the biggest-selling week one album in Ireland this year, outselling Ed Sheeran and Coldplay.
Hot Press caught up with Hozier's manager and MCD director Caroline Downey to talk about the triumph.
"I think the album is brilliant and to get this response for a first album is pretty awesome,' she said, speaking from Nashville, where Hozier is about to embark on a 6 week sold-out tour to coincide with the US release. "When I heard how well it was doing, I thought 'yeah, that makes sense.' We expected it and aren't surprised!"
During the week, Rollercoaster Records in Kilkenny also nodded to the album's success, tweeting that Hozier was selling like records used to in the golden era of the industry.
"It's absolutely flying," Rollercoaster boss Willie Meighan told Hot Press. "Between now and Christmas, it looks like it's going to be the biggest seller in 10 years. It's so long that we've sold on this level that I really can't remember the last one.
"You're sort of back in the good old days, the likes of a new U2 album or new REM album at the time, where people get buzzed up for months. We actually got pre enquiries, people coming in months in advance looking for Hozier, which you don't really get any more."
