His medicine...
What is it with Irish band-member casualties this summer? The latest to head to A&E is Darragh Butler, drummer out of Wilt. Read on to find out what happened, and to hear how their European tour kicked continental arse anyway
A Spinal Tap-like DIY accident resulted in Wilt travelling to Europe last week minus drummer Darragh Butler.
Explaining why he's missed out on the 9-date trek, a spokesman says:
"He was planing a door in his new house and got a splinter in his hand, which became infected. Having swelled up to twice its normal size, the band had no option but to find a stand-in."
Which they did in the shape of Binzer, the former Frames sticksman and current Label man.
A couple of intensive rehearsals later and it was all systems go for their August 27 tour opener in Cologne with Reel Big Fish, a show which singer Cormac Battle describes as, "Awesome. Audiences in Europe start from the premise that they're going to enjoy themselves, and only have a bad time if you're bad. There's none of the standing around waiting to be impressed which you get in the UK."
As well as accompanying the Big Fish boys on their visits to Germany, Switzerland and England, Wilt stopped off at the 2-Day Festival in Austria. While there they were informed that My Medicine had been made 'Record Of The Week' by national rock station FM4, and sold a highly respectable 600 copies in its first week of release.
They also found time to sink a pint or five of Weissbier with Flogging Molly, the Californian folk rowdies fronted by expat Dubliner Dave King, who metal fans might remember from Fastway. Although yet to play on home soil, their Drunken Lullabies album has shifted 120,000 units in the U.S. and broken into the Billboard Top 200. Needless to say, Hot Press was in attendance and will be bringing you the gory details in a coming issue.
More immediately, Wilt play an acoustic one-off at the Dublin Sugar Club on September 22 and then hotfoot it over to Blighty on October 6 for the Kerrang! Camber Sands Weekender.
