Have A Nice JJ
MARK GREANEY HAS been talking to hotpress about JJ72’s eagerly awaited second album.
“We’ve six songs demoed, and another couple written and awaiting a visit to the studio,” he divulged minutes after getting off a flight from Tokyo. “I can only really write when I’m at home, so I’m going to have to try and take a bit of time off. It’s strange – sometimes it feels like we should go and make the next album tomorrow, and sometimes it’s, ‘No, no, no, let’s wait six months’. There’s definitely a lot of new ideas that never even existed for the first record.”
Have they come up with their ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ or ‘1979’ yet?
“‘The one’? I know what you’re saying and, really, that’s what I’m trying to get on this album. I want to write a song that in 10, 20, 30 years time, people will hear and go, ‘Fucking hell, that’s amazing.’ There are a couple that come close, but close isn’t good enough.”
There’ll definitely be one new song in the set next week when the JJs take care of warm-up duties for U2 at Slane.
“We’ve been doing a song called ‘Formulae’ for a while live, and I imagine we’ll give it another run out at Slane along with our greatest hit,” Greaney laughs. “We’re only half their age, but having played with them already on the Elevation tour, I can recognise the similarities between us and U2. I’m looking forward to it.”
