Funeral of Glen Hansard to take place in Dublin on Tuesday

The funeral of Glen Hansard is set to take place in St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin on Tuesday, August 4.

A public wake will take place in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8 on Monday, 3rd August between 11am and 4pm. Glen will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.

Glen's funeral will take place at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin 8 on Tuesday, 4th August at 1:30pm. The funeral will be open to the public, however access inside the Cathedral will be extremely limited given the numbers expected.

The world-renowned Dublin singer-songwriter – who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008, alongside his Once co-star Markéta Irglová – died following a road traffic accident in the early hours of Wednesday morning, July 29.

In an online post earlier this week, St Patrick's Cathedral described Glen as "a good friend of the Cathedral", who generously shared "his extraordinary talent with us on a number of special occasions over the years."

"Whether performing in support of charitable causes or helping us mark significant moments in the life of the Cathedral, his music brought warmth, hope and joy to all who heard it."

Tributes to Glen have poured in from across the world this week – from the likes of Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, President Catherine Connolly, Michael D. Higgins, Dermot Kennedy, Ed Sheeran, and Hozier, as well as from bandmates and collaborators like Markéta Irglová  and The Frames.

"He was a man I knew and loved," Hot Press editor Niall Stokes remarked, as part of his tribute to Glen. "A brilliant musician, a great singer, and a fantastically charismatic and intense character, who always gave his utmost in everything he did.

"From the first time we laid eyes on him in Hot Press, and heard that powerful Hansard voice, we knew that he had something utterly unique to offer. And so it proved, over and over again..."

Glen is survived by his wife Maire and his son Christy.
