Fugees' Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean claim there will "absolutely" be new music in the future

Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean have said they would "absolutely" release music in the future.

The Fugees bandmates are set to take the stage at Milton Keynes National Bowl for the Diaspora Calling! festival today.

The BBC spoke to the artists ahead of their performances, asking if fans could expect new music in the future, following the 30th anniversary of The Score. 

"Will there be music in the future?" Jean restated with Hill responding, "Absolutely".

"We're in God's hands," Jean added. "I'm back with my bandmate! So we're in an amazing place. I think the energy is very important."

"There was an incredible healing process that happened with us as a band and as bandmates," Hill finished.

The Fugees - made up of Hill, Jean and Pras Michel - attained success in the '90s with their only two studio albums, Blunted On Reality in 1994 and The Score in 1996.

Featuring hits like 'Fu-Gee-La' and 'Killing Me Softly', The Score hit number one on the pop charts and sold over five million copies. The album won a pair of Grammy's in 1997 before the band's eventual split.

The group reformed briefly between 2004 and 2006 as well as to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Score in 2021.

They were set to tour the US in 2024 but cancelled their scheduled performances, with Michel suing Hill for fraud, claiming the tour was sabotaged by Hill's "arrogance" and "narcissistic tendencies".

Michel is currently serving a 14 year prison sentence in the United States, following his conviction in a billion-dollar Malaysian money laundering scheme in 2023.

The Diaspora Calling! festival was launched by Hill in 2016 as a music art initiative celebrating the culture, creativity and "shared histories of the African diaspora." This will be the festival's first time in the UK and marks Hill's only confirmed UK appearance for 2026. Past artists have included Nas, Kehlani, Noname and Little Simz.

Playing alongside Hill and Jean are Erykah Badu, Giggs and Hill's sons YG Marley and Zion Marley - also the grandchildren of Bob Marley.

The pair took to the stage together at Hill's 2024 3Arena gig, playing 'No Woman, No Cry' and 'Ready or Not'. They also performed together at Roberta Flack's memorial in 2025, with Jean joining Hill later that year on stage in London to celebrate classic Fugees hits.
