Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We?
The Cranberries debut had everything – Dolores O’Riordan’s powerful, keening voice, guitarist Noel Hogan’s chiming, melodic textures, Stephen Street’s lush production and more importantly, songs that sounded great on the radio. Released in the spring of 1993, the album was initially ignored by the record buying public. However, throughout that summer and autumn, the Limerick band toured the United States, where their blend of dreamy, jangly indie-pop eventually caught fire. MTV put ‘Linger’ into heavy rotation and by the end of ‘93, the single reached number eight on the U.S. charts, while the album went double platinum.
No 40 in 2009, as voted for by over 200 Irish musicians. Up from No 93 in 2004.
