Elvis Costello Dismisses Expressions of 'Sympathy' from The Sun

He may have cancelled his tour following surgery for 'very aggressive' cancer, but Elvis Costello has lost absolutely none of his legendary spikiness.

The Sun newspaper had reported that the singer cancelled his tour as he 'battled' aggressive cancer. However, Elvis was having none of the implied jingo-ism. He first pointed out that he had cancelled his tour to recover – not to 'battle'. In addition to calling the tabloid and its reporters out for that particular spin, he also made a cutting reference to the newspaper's ignominious role in relation to Hillsborough Disaster of 1989, in which 96 people died. The Sun's portrayal of the tragic events of that day amounted to a completely inaccurate, deliberately provocative and utterly mendacious slur on Liverpool fans. It resulted in a mass boycott of the daily across much of Liverpool.

Elvis' mother, Lilian Alda was from Liverpool.
