Dub Come Save Me
Roots' Run Come Save Me given a dub re-working. If that sounds appealing on paper, it sounds even better on the ears
Mmmmm … Roots’ Run Come Save Me given a dub re-working. If that sounds appealing on paper, it sounds even better on the ears. Roots’ material – particularly on Run Come… has always had a big dub flavour, so this is perhaps a logical next step. And while it’s not as ‘out there’ as the Mad Professor’s versions of Massive Attack’s ‘Protection’, there’s still enough here to justify parting with your shekels. ‘Man Fi Cool’ – a new track as far as we know – is fairly straight, breezy, but after that, it’s heavy on the reverb all the way. ‘Highest Grade Dub’ is exemplary – a skanking rhythm, reverbed FX and drums and a muddy bassline. The version of ‘Revolution 5’ with Chali2na sounds better than the original and the dancefloor rocker ‘Witness’ sounds equally rough in dub. There’s more vocal numbers than you’d expect – three or four (we think – we got in the mood and, er, ‘imbibed’ while listening) and only the ‘Dreamy Days’ dub fails to match the glory of the original – but it’s still an interesting jaunt. Excellent.
