Dream Revolution
No wave freak rockers neatly bypass second album syndrome
Cleverly booting the ‘difficult second album’ cliché out the door by making the follow-up to their well received debut The Other Side Of Fear almost immediately after the latter was unleashed into the wild, Dublin-based outfit Loko Parentis (originally from Cork, trivia fiends) have created another arresting slab of no-wave rock that recalls the likes of Queens of the Stone Age at their most spacey and Television’s more blood-thirsty moments.
Beginning with sinister bass throbs, Dream Revolution sets it’s stall out pretty quickly with ‘Logical Love’, which swaggers with the best of them. ‘Remember To Breathe’ builds on the sleazy undercurrent with a particularly perverted low end. With the likes of the up-tempo ‘Julie Christie’ and the bat-shit crazy ‘Do What You Love’ making sure we all know they can rock with the best of them, it’s still the beguiling ‘The Monster In Me’ that really titillates this listener. With a vibe similar to the Therapy? oldie ‘Fantasy Bag,’ the track spirals towards sonic insanity with glee and is eventually reprised for the stunning 12 minute album closer ‘The Monster [Expand Your Consciousness]’. It’s a hugely satisfying way to end an impressive record.
Key Track: ‘The Monster In Me’
