Devin Dazzle and the Neon Lights
Ravers of the world, prepared to be confused...
Ravers of the world, prepared to be confused. Felix might have popularised synth-pop in the mainstream dance world – and with it, propelled himself into the jet-set A-list – but ‘Devin Dazzle…’ is, by and large, a different beat to 2001’s ‘Kittenz And Thee Glitz’. This album falls into two categories: grimy, manic guitar-heavy punk funk with vocals from The Neon Light – five potty-mouthed female fashionistas – and deeper, slower electro-poppy moments with silky, robotic vox from Tyrone ‘Visionary’ Palmer. It is – according to Felix – an autobiographical record, the two sides of Da Housecat. But is it any good? Well, yes, if you stick with it. There are no ‘hit records’ here, but there’s an excellent balance to this. Sounding like the good bits from Daft Punk’s last album crossed with DJ Hell, Fun Boy Three, DFA and The Knack’s ‘My Sharona’, this is camp, trendy, dark - and a good record.
