Deserter’s song
A cover of punk oldie "Johnny Hit And Run Pauline", expertly revisited by Tex-Mex alt.country grandaddies Giant Sand, looms large on tonight’s No Disco (Weds, 11.15pm)
Dublin residents are already griping long and loud that they didn’t play it last night in Vicar Street, so as ever No Disco (tonight, N2, 11.15pm) step into the breach and comfort us with the video. We refer, of course, to Giant Sand’s "Johnny Hit And Run Pauline", a cover of an oldie from seminal Californian punks X, from the Sand’s latest LP, Cover Magazine, on deck for tonight’s No Disco. Listen out, incidentally, for backing vocals from Ms Polly J. Harvey of Dorset.
And in other gig-and-video-tie-in type news, our favourite master of puppets Wayne Coyne and his wild bunch The Flaming Lips will be beating a doubtlessly glitter-strewn path to Dublin in July for another of their legendarily over-the-top live shows. So to celebrate them baby and praise them like they should, No Disco will be bringing on ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’, an oldie but goodie from Wayne’s beautiful world.
Also en route tonight are newies from Looper and Cousteau, both with new albums on the way; an oldie from The Jesus And Mary Chain, about to regale us with another Best Of collection; a recent fave from Peaches, whose promo is, let us say, exactly what you’d expect from a former porn star currently resident in Berlin (our sources in Cork went so far as to use the words "very rude"); and a re-release from Cane 141 and Stephen Hero, the latter of whose ‘Darkness & The Day’ LP is just out. Additionally, a very special report comes from Glasgow, highlighting visionary local label Geographic, and including interviews with the Pastels, Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair.
Lastly, as a small gesture of condolence for Lift To Experience bassist Josh "Bear" Browning - whose wife died suddenly and tragically on the eve of what should have been their Dublin Green Energy date - No Disco will play ‘These Are the Days’ from their gorgeous debut lp of last year, The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads.
