The public criticizes casting Scarlett Johansson as the lead in Ghost in the Shell, the live adaptation of a Japanese anime
After the first pictures release of Scarlett Johansson as the lead role in Ghost in the Shell, the live adaptation of a Japanese anime, viewers express outrage at the "whitewashing."
According to The Hollywood Reporter the original anime is set in 21st century Japan. Naturally, it prompts a serious conversation about the frequency at which Hollywood casts white characters in roles meant for other ethnicities and the repercussions for such actions.
However, Sam Yoshiba, the director of international business from the company's Tokyo office, said, "I think Scarlett Johansson is well cast... She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place." His opinion certainly dissents against the general outrage, but his voice cannot account for all Japanese people.

Whether Hollywood will succumb to public pressure is yet to be seen, but in all likeliness, the show will go on.
