Controlfreak - Disgraceland
DUBLIN DUO DELIVER DISGRACEFULLY GOOD DEBUT
Every now and then a band comes along who aren’t afraid to raise their heads above the parapets, kick against the pricks and generally try and tell the unenlightened exactly how is it – whether they like it or not. Dublin duo Controlfreak are one such act, who are currently raging against the machine. While others are content to wallow in front of their plasma tellies every night watching a near endless stream of tears and tantrum-based talent(less) shows, the two-piece have put their energies into making a highly politicised punk, post-punk and ‘80s indie-inspired debut, in an effort to stir the sheep out of their self-imposed sleep. Good on them.
Government greed and corruption, child abuse within the Catholic Church and more are all tackled on Disgraceland (which or may not have been inspired by the Therapy? song of the same name) and no punches are pulled along the way. Opening with the spiky ‘Hey Paradox,’ Controlfreak prove they’ve got the musical chops to back up their opinions right from the get-go and if you’re a fan of early Stiff Little Fingers, the Banshees and The Cure then you’ll adore the likes of ‘Alright (A Right To Choice)’ and ‘Human Harmonizer.’ Their canny cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick In The Wall,’ which they’ve renamed ‘Another Prick In The Dáil,’ is sure to get people talking too. If you’ve been searching for a band with something to say then look no further.
Key Track: 'Alright (A Right To Choice)
