Christina Courtin
EXCRUCIATINGLY HORRIBLE DEBUT FROM JUILLIARD GRADUATE
She may have assembled an incredible supporting cast featuring former musicians in Tom Waits’ band, the Travelling Wilburys and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, but Juilliard graduate Christina Courtin’s debut is not my cuppa meat at all. There’s no doubting that she has the chops (in the past she’s worked with Kanye West and Ryan Adams) but on her own she doesn’t seem to be able to deliver the goods. Her self-titled ten-track album is full of mid-paced, and on occasion maudlin numbers, and her child-like wail on songs like ‘Bundah’ and ‘One Man Down’ is excruciating in parts. Norah Jones can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that her easy listening crown isn’t about to be taken off her.
