Chris Stapleton releases rendition of Tom Petty’s ‘I Should Have Known it’
The cover is part of the tribute album Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, out June 21
American singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer Chris Stapleton’s rendition of Tom Petty’s ‘I Should Have Known It’ has debuted today, accompanied by a video that features vintage photos of Petty.
The cover is part of the forthcoming Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, featuring Dolly Parton, Dierks Bentley, George Strait, Luke Combs, Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Lainey Wilson, Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench and more.
The new track closely follows the release of ‘Southern Accents’ by Petty’s friend and country legend Dolly Parton, as well as Dierks Bentley’s rendition of ‘American Girl’, which is currently climbing through the Top 35 on US Country radio.
Petty is known for bringing rock influences to contemporary country. Throughout his extensive career, he collaborated and built long lasting friendships with many of the genre’s greats, such as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Marty Stuart, John Prine, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, George Strait, Hank Williams Jr. and Willie Nelson.
A number of these artists have curated this tribute album, exploring Petty’s extensive discography and adding their own personal touches. Find the full list of tracks from the album, out June 21, below.
