Austrian emigre and dark-horse addition to the Irish SXSW shortlist Pina releases debut album Quick Look
West Cork resident Pina Kollars opens her account with the release this week of Quick Look, her debut album for Peter Gabriel's Real World label.
Variously compared to Bjork and Kate Bush, the Austrian moved to Ireland following the break-up of her marriage and the death of her grandfather – a loss which she addresses on one of the collection's stand-outs, 'Josephine'.
"He had been ill for a long time," she reflects. "I was fortunate to be at the hospital when he died. I call him Josephine in the song because I don't really want to say Grandpa – I wanted to make it more like a friend, which was what he was to me. I can never just invent something, I have to experience it."
Having opened for the Indigo Girls this weekend in the Olympia, it's off to Austin, Texas for a South By Southwest showcase.
