Britney Spears sells rights to music catalogue
Britney Spears' catalogue includes her nine albums, since her debut in 1999 with the record ...Baby One More Time...
Britney Spears has sold the rights to her entire music catalogue to independent music publisher Primary Wave.
The details of the sale and the exact price have not been made public, however, according to NBC NEWS, the 44-year-old singer has sold the rights for around $200m.
Primary Wave has also acquired the rights to the catalogues of The Notorious BIG, Prince and Whitney Houston.
Other artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, and Shakira, have also recently sold the rights to their catalogues.
Lawrence Mestel founded Primary Wave in 2006, after purchasing 20% of Kurt Cobain's share of the Nirvana catalogue.
Known for her hits ‘... Baby One More Time’, ‘Oops!... I Did It Again’, ‘Toxic’ and ‘Gimme More’, Spears is one of the best-selling female artists, selling over 150 million records worldwide.
The American singer was placed under a conservatorship in 2008, which oversaw her finances and personal life. It was placed after she was involuntarily held in a psychiatric hold, and originally meant to last days. However, Spears only ended the conservatorship thirteen years later.
In January of 2024, Spears said that she would never return to the music industry, with her last release being collaboration with will.i.am ‘Mind Your Business’ (2023).
Away from music in 2023, the singer published her memoir The Woman in Me.
