Bring Your Own Hammer to release second album From the Tombs
The group features over 20 different musicians, including The Cranberries' Fergal Lawler.
Musical collective Bring Your Own Hammer will release their second studio album, From the Tombs, on November 13.
The 21-track double album features pop, folk, instrumental, sean nós, an extended spoken word piece and more, exploring "the history of crime, law and order in Ireland and among the Irish Diaspora in the long nineteenth century," according to a statement.
"I hope that people simply become absorbed by the power of the stories and the beauty of their presentation, something which musical delivery has a secret unique power to conjure," said guitarist Bernard Butler.
"We can swim in the sound as well as the narratives and create our own new impression of these stories of people we could not have known."
The group features over 20 different musicians. Among them are The Cranberries' Fergal Lawler, Fatima Mansions' Hugh Bunker, The Undertones' Damian O'Neill, June Miles-Kingston, Mike Smalle and many more.
"I was fascinated by the idea of creating a piece of music to soundtrack a particular period of time, to try to imagine myself as one of the people on board the Elphinstone, but also as an observer or narrator," said Lawler. "I was honoured to be asked to participate in a project with so many talented and creative people."
In May, the group released the album's title track. Rooted in the story of an Irish servant in New York City in 1881, the pop song reflects on the story of a woman committed to the Tombs, charged with infanticide.
Convicted of manslaughter, sentenced and sent to Blackwell Island, the servant was released two years later for good behaviour. Right after, she disappeared from the historical record completely.
'From the Tombs' is a sequel song to, and largely based on the same sources as 'Old Oak Road' by Smalle with Cathal Coughlan and Jay Wobble, from their 2024 debut album My Grief on the Sea.
