Brian McFadden has sparked outrage in New Zealand with comments he made whilst guest-presenting the breakfast show on Auckland’s More FM.
“If you’re not gay, a man should not be wearing pink,” he told listeners. “No normal bloke should wear pink t-shirts. Deliberately loving pink, wearing pink underwear, pink socks, pink shirts, pink anything is wrong. Saying pink is a form of red is the same as saying homosexual is a form of male.”
The 27-year-old’s comments brought swift condemnation from the local Rainbow Youth gay charity.
“A lot of young people are quite impressionable, and when they see celebrities saying stuff like that, they think it's okay to say it themselves,” says spokesman Robert Marshall. “It's always unacceptable to put people down based on their sexuality – it's just like putting down people because of their race. Judging people just because they're a little bit different from you.”
This was a measured response compared to the message board fury that’s greeted his comments, and is in danger of overshadowing the release of McFadden’s new Set In Stone album.
“What an absolute jerk,” rages one irate chat-room user. “I hope his fucking career is over after this shocking outburst.”
