Brendan Gleeson to Star in Crime Comedy Mr. Cranky
The Irish film legend shows no signs of slowing down as he is cast for Australian crime comedy
Fans of Brendan Gleeson can rejoice as he has been cast as the frustrated crime lord in Australian comedy Mr. Cranky.
Gleeson will play Kevin Darcy, a crime lord whose specialty is in threatening people who can't pay their debts. A man with a terrible temper and very little patience, Darcy soon finds himself tangled up in a huge gang war. After a bomb that was meant for him kills his ex-girlfriend, Darcy becomes a reluctant father to his estranged 7 year old daughter, Angela. Through bed time stories and tea parties, Darcy evolves into a doting dad but the crime life is never far behind him. With Angela's life in danger, Darcy must try and flee to Australia's Gold Coast in the hopes of escaping the grips of crime lords and begin to establish a normal life for young Angela and himself.
This will be Gleeson's return to comedy after 2011's incredibly successful The Guard. Will Machin, CEO of Metro International, is overjoyed to have Gleeson on board. "It was love at first sight when we read this very funny script so, we were bowled over when Brendan Gleeson agreed to take the lead as the hot-headed Kevin, a role that was so clearly written for him". Mr.Cranky will be directed by Jonathan Teplitzky with a script penned by Chris Nyst and is due to start filming this coming September in Melbourne.
The expected release date is yet unknown but there's plenty of Gleeson to go around this year. Audiences can see him beside Michael Fassbender in Assasin's Creed, under the directional guide of Ben Affleck in Live by the Night and alongside Emma Thompson in World War II drama, Alone in Berlin.
