Beware of the god
Spirited comeback from punk veterans
There’s an old saying in the punk community – “punk’s not dead… it just sucks now.” With that in mind, we come to Beware Of The God with a slightly suspicious attitude. This is the third record from reformed legends Paranoid Visions and it proves in many ways that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Despite our initial concerns however, Beware Of The God sees Deko and Co. as fiercely political as ever. In fact, with rising prices, sleazy governments and wide-spread depression it may as well be 1981 all over again, as the singer points out on ‘High Cost Of Living.’
Punctuated by sound bites from news stories from over the years, the record is a biting, sneering beast that pulls no punches when it comes to its opinions (‘Fritzl’s Basement,’ ‘Sex Kills’). The addition of co-vocalist Aoife Destruction is also a canny move as she injects some much needed grrrl power into tracks like ‘Mongoloid.’ While some of the songs sag around the edges (‘No Sunny Days,’ ‘Shell To Sea’) the majority of those on offer are as spiky as a brand new Mohawk, plus let’s face it, in today’s times we need a band like Paranoid Visions more than ever.
Key Track: 'Sex Kills'
