Back To Mine
The Back To Mine series sure makes a change from the average chill-out comps – a host of dance music types select the records they (allegedly) kick back to in their crib. While greater
quality control could have been applied to some previous efforts (Faithless), there has still been enough interesting nuggets unearthed to make 'em
worthwhile. And this one, by the always over-rated Talvin Singh, is no different.
Kicking off with Craig Armstrong's over-played 'Weather Storm', it takes an unfortunate drop into the prog chill out of 'Dance', by U Srinivas and Michael Brook, before thankfully finding its feet. It leans (unsurprisingly) towards Indian vibes from the likes of Swati Natekar, Ali Farka Toure and Massive Attack's excellent mix of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, alongside more conventional gems from the Higher Intelligence Agency and Photek.
Individually, some of the tracks may sound a little lame, but this well-programmed mix seems to bring out the best in each of 'em. OK, so it's all a bit 'cool', but Singh fans (and hopefully some non-Singh fans) will lap up this open-minded compilation.
