Ask
Uninspiring offering from MOR also-ran.
Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, Ask is the third record from soft rock types the Tom Fuller Band and features musicians who’ve played with everyone’s third-favourite Beatle, Paul McCartney. An unashamedly MOR effort, the record is largely let down by Fuller’s vocals. Not as raunchy as Rod Stewart’s nor as pretty as Tom Petty’s, the singer’s pipes lie somewhere in between and fail to set the likes of ‘Anthem Man’ or ‘Lovers’ alight. It’s not all bad: ‘Doin’ Nothin’’ (which benefits from some ace gang vocals) is a jolly jaunt that Jeff Lynne would be proud of, but for the most part, Ask lacks that spark of greatness and fizzles out faster than a barbeque in December.
