Alt-J admit that they're 'not that cool'
They may have delighted 12,000 fans in 3Arena a few weeks ago, but the supremely talented Alt-J tell Hot Press' John Walshe that their status as one of the hottest acts around doesn’t quite reflect what they think of themselves
Before an appearance on Jools Holland, the three-piece had the jitters. “There was FKA Twigs and Jungle,” says drummer Thom Green. Both brand new, popular and Mercury-nominated. I felt we’re a bit past that. We’re not that cool, compared to them.”
Popular opinion would suggest otherwise; their Dublin show was a rip-roaring success. The band reveal that their live show is a keenly crafted science.
“When we play live, it’s quite intricate,” singer/guitarist Joe Newman explains. “We play to a click track and we can’t get it wrong, because if we get it wrong the music sounds awful and that’s what people have come to hear. We invest most of our time in playing the music the way it should sound.”
Read about the balance between success and fame, the departure of founding member Gwil Sainsbury, and how making music is “like Buckaroo” in the new issue of Hot Press, on shelves tomorrow!
