Album Review: The Lemon Twigs, Everything Harmony
Fourth album of soaring harmonies from New York siblings
Fresh from working with Weyes Blood on her acclaimed album, And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow, twenty-something New York brothers, Brian and Michael D’Addario, channel their love of 1970s’ music into a sprawling 13-track odyssey, which calls to mind some of the finest musicians of that decade.
The acoustic folk of ‘When Winter Comes Around’ and ‘New To Me’ have harmonies so divine, it’s hard to avoid the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons. There’s also a distinct ’70s Bay Area vibe to tracks like ‘Any Time Of Day’ and ‘What Happens To A Heart’, the vocals occasionally so sweet they verge on saccharine. Elsewhere, the chiming guitars and infectious melodies of ‘What You Were Doing’ and ‘Ghost Run Free’ call to mind the pristine power-pop of Big Star at their best.
‘Corner Of My Eye’ is the kind of polished, timeless pop that The Everly Brothers might have created if they’d had access to modern recording equipment, while ‘Born To Be Lonely’ is sweet and sweeping in equal measure. The title track is a little too sprawling to really engage, though, and on The Byrds-ean ‘In My Head’, the siblings seem to be attempting a British accent that’s more Dick Van Dyke than Baxter Dury. For the most part, however, Everything Harmony delivers the goods.
