Album Review: Pantha du Prince – The Triad
BRILLIANT AMBIENT ELECTRO FROM GERMAN PRODUCER
A favourite of artists like Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem (he counts members of both bands amongst his past collaborators), Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha Du Prince, is among Germany’s most respected dance producers. His standing will only be enhanced by The Triad, one of the year’s finest electronic records.
The album kicks off with the suitably titled ‘The Winter Hymn’, which morphs from its icy ambient beginnings into a superb minimal house number. ‘You What? Euphoria!’ is ghostly glitchtronica with echoes of Aphex Twin, whilst ‘Frau Im Mond, Sterne Laufen’ is an inspired slice of ambient house. Like a generation of electronic producers, Pantha Du Prince counts Ireland’s own My Bloody Valentine among his biggest influences, and the ethereal aesthetic of Kevin Shields and co. is writ large on the gorgeous ‘In An Open Space’.
Elsewhere, the epic ‘Chasing Vapour Trails’ is ambient techno par excellence, whilst ‘Lichterschmaus’ is an inspired piece of abstract electro recalling Weber’s fellow German producer, Gas. If you like your electronic music to be daring and imaginative, The Triad is a must.
