Super comeback from Irish artist - 8/10
It's been a while! This is Naimee Coleman’s first album since 1996’s Silver Wrists and 2001’s Bring Down The Moon set the Dubliner off on frantic years of touring, and supporting acts of the vintage of Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Suzanne Vega, Robin Gibb and Sinéad O’Connor. For good measure, she also amassed a serious award haul.
The Edges was incubated during lockdown with Adam Marcello, and proves that Coleman has mislaid none of her instincts for writing songs of love and melancholy. If you’ve caught the inventive single ‘Gave It All Away’ featuring Gemma Hayes, it’s just the cheese in the trap for the gems that await here.
’Lost Our Way’ benefits from the input of Paul Noonan, while ‘Paper Thin’ is a plaintive song about the fragility of life and ‘Do Ya Proud’ is a confident folk ballad. ‘Because I Told You So’ comes alloyed to an infectious rhythm, and the cover of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ proves Coleman can mine hidden depths in other artists’ lyrics.
The Edges is the perfect soundtrack for a reflective evening in. Naimee Coleman’s gap years have served her well.
