It's a patchy effort from the US singer-songwriter
If you're wondering what Jason Mraz has been up to the past few years, he's probably been tending to his avocado trees on his cleverly named "Mranch" outside of San Diego. Whatever about that, Mraz's latest album focuses on his favorite theme: love. At 40, Mraz is still capable of capturing the kind of giddy young love which makes you want to dedicate your entire being to that special someone. For the most part, Know is a heart-warming record.
His time on the farm might be getting to Mraz's head, because there's definitely a folkier sound than we've heard before in his music. Tracks like 'Let's See What The Night Can Do' contain classic twangy guitars and modern countrified harmonising. The only thing missing is a soft southern drawl.
The album's packed with radio-ready tracks like 'Have it All' that have a light, upbeat feel you can't help grinning along to. 'Might As Well Dance' is the classiest track, with a funky electric organ and wholesome guitar riff to top it off. I chuckled as the chorus jumped from 'holding hands' to 'taking off our pants' in seconds. In the words of Ron Burgundy: that escalated quickly.
For those fond of Mraz's textbook lovey-dovey songs, this will not disappoint. But I was left with a feeling that he should deal with some of the hardships that come along as well. Everything isn't always rosy in the garden. Or on the farm...
