Album Review: Counting Crows, Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!
Vintage effort from Adam Duritz and Co. – 8/10
Initially (and unfairly) grouped into the fledgling grunge scene, this Grammy and Oscar-nominated bunch have spent the last three decades spreading their musical wings, and serving up some of the finest pop and alternative rock around.
Hailed as one of the best storytellers of his generation, band-leader Adam Duritz is on vintage form for Counting Crows’ first full-length in 11 years, which is bursting with raw rich vocals, clever lyrics, and plenty of hooks and heart.
Featuring all four tracks from their ‘21 EP Butter Miracle, Suite One, which have been remixed and fine-tuned, plus five new ones, the record is a love letter to old school rock ‘n’ roll that fans will be smitten with. An uplifting listen for these downbeat days, there’s some Hold Steady, Mott The Hoople and Jim Steinman discernible in the likes of ‘Boxcars’ and the stunning ‘Under The Aurora’.
Rounding out proceedings is ‘Bobby And The Rat-Kings’, a stirring anthem with echoes of ‘Born To Run’ and ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’. It makes for an excellent conclusion to a fine album.
8/10
