Album review: Cian Finn: This Applies
Thought Provoking LP From West Of Ireland Reggae Act
It’s no coincidence that the Gaelic meaning of the name Cian is ancient, far and enduring. It aptly applies to Irish reggae, dub and soul artist, Cian Finn, who’s traversed the planet from Goa to Kingstown. This Applies bursts to life with the feelgood ‘So Nice’: the thick, chilled bass and uplifting lyrics set the template for the LP. ‘Come Away’ melts in your ears and its slow-tempo climax is elevated by a luscious sax. Finn poignantly deliverers the line “Every breath that you breath/in this present moment be.”
Two iconic reggae veterans, Horseman and Max Romeo, feature on ‘Reasonable’ and on the title track. The latter is an unhurried exploration of self that branches out into a message of global tolerance. ‘Precious Thing’ possesses a slightly more up-tempo vibe, with a soothing horn section that embraces the listener with open arms. ‘Education’ examines spiritual growth, while encouraging the listener to lay back and kick his or her feet up. The record slightly loses momentum on ‘Winter Blues’ and ‘Look To The Future’, but surges back to life with the stirring ‘Too Fast’. Finn’s message is bookended perfectly by the gentle, galvanising ‘Live Life’.
There’s an argument that the music here is lyrically repetitive and at times basic. However, I think that’s a facile perception. I challenge you to listen to this record – and not to feel utterly rejuvenated afterwards.
