After The Wake
Up-and-coming trad star hits the sweet spot
Having made his name on the folk scene with Patrick’s Head, Dubliner John Byrne’s first solo record is a lilting, satisfyingly traditional take on the genre that is sure to please even the most fickle fan. While the tin whistles, banjos and accordions are beautifully played on the likes of ‘A Song With No Words,’ it’s Byrne’s natural vocal delivery that makes the album stand out from the crowd. Overall a pleasant (if slightly repetitive) listen.
