Ahead of the release of his highly anticipated debut single, ‘Hey Ma’, Dublin singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe reflects on playing with Ed Sheeran, and looks ahead to a busy summer...

How did you start songwriting?
I was like 15 or 16, and I pretty much just wanted to play the guitar. Both things came hand in hand. It was a trial and error kind of thing, but I started writing and got better over time.
Who are your favourite musicians at the moment?
I really like Stephen Wilson Jr. I’m also really into Mk.gee, and I’m listening to Wunderhorse a bit. I’m always listening to the new thing I can find...
What was it like performing with Ed Sheeran on St Patrick’s Day?
It was great – a lot of fun. Ed’s been very good to me, and it was a really nice moment to be able to share the stage with him. I became good pals with Lewis Capaldi last year, who’s very good friends with my now manager – and they showed Ed my music. Since then, he’s been a lot of help. He’s been very supportive of everything I’m doing.

What can the listeners expect in terms of new music?
I’ve got music coming out in a couple of weeks’ time, and we’re going to be releasing a lot over the summer, which I’m really excited about.
What upcoming gigs should fans know about?
I’m going to be opening up for Zach Bryan in Hyde Park on June 28. I’m doing a lot of festivals and some tour support stuff. I suppose once the music is out, I’ll lock in some of my own dates – but I’m going to be busy over the summer!
‘Hey Ma’ is out tomorrow, May 23.
