87th Academy Awards Winners
Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel win big on Oscars Night
While Ireland's The Song of the Sea lost to Big Hero 6 in the Best Animated Feature category and Boogaloo and Graham fell to The Phone Call in Best Short Film, we at Hot Press won't be writing about the 87th Academy Awards with any bitterness. Truly, we won't! There was plenty to enjoy at last night's ceremony for those of us who stayed up until the staggeringly late conclusion at 5:15 a.m.
In a Best Picture race that may as well have only had two contestants, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and Richard Linklater's Boyhood, Birdman was the ultimate victor, claiming the top prize and Best Director for Iñárritu. The acclaimed film also went home with prizes for Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay. Boyhood claimed one award out of its six nominations for Best Supporting Actress, Patricia Arquette.
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel was another big winner with trophies for Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score and Production Design. Just behind Birdman and Budapest was Whiplash, which took a Best Supporting Actor prize for J.K. Simmons along with Best Sound Mixing and Best Editing.
