1st Album
In the wrong hands this could have gone horribly wrong, but 1st Album manages to strike a balance.
“Motherfuckers of the night, suck my dick, kiss my ass. In limousines we have sex every night with my famous friends.” No, it’s not the lyrics from the latest Marilyn Manson release, but a sound bite from French electro duo Miss Kittin & Hacker’s debut album. Against a decidedly ’80s-inspired synth-pop meets electro-techno backdrop provided by Hacker, Kittin, known to her nearest and dearest as Caroline, pouts and purrs her way through the melodic, pop nirvana of ‘Stock Exchange’ and ‘Walking In The Sunshine’, as well as tackling real-life issues and railing against the fame game, most notably on ‘Frank Sinatra’, but also on ‘Stripper’ and ‘Live On MTV’.
In the wrong hands this could have gone horribly wrong, but 1st Album manages to strike a balance between retro sound-plundering and futuristic pop sensibilities, with effortless panache.
