One of the leading mobile phone and accessory sellers in Ireland, The Phone Depot – based in Kerry – has spent four years growing its business and gaining plaudits for its customer service, knowledgeable staff, and for consistently having the most up-to-date tech in stores. As part of our Christmas Gifts feature, we talked to owner Jason Burke, about the phenomenal success of the business.

“I started selling phones in a tiny little unit with an English business partner years ago,” he tells me, speaking from his home in Kerry. “I had hardly any phones at all. Just a few little ones and a few covers and that was that.

“But I found out early on that I had a good rapport with customers and the idea to build The Phone Depot started from there. I’m very proud of the fact that this is a self-made business. It was built from me having one or two phones to fix up and sell, to now having thousands in stock.”
Their work was rewarded recently when The Phone Depot won an Independent Tech Retailer of 2018 Award.
“That meant a lot to us, because a lot of the people who nominated us – they mentioned that it was all about our customer service. See, I think we have the knowledge and the service to look after anyone who isn’t familiar with technology. For example, a lot of our customers would be people who go to the bigger chains but feel frightened and confused by what their told there. A lot of it doesn’t make sense to them. So they come to us. That’s what sets us apart I think.”

As well as this, Jason also stresses that The Phone Depot has been ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest phone and technology developments.

“I have a great understanding of the new phones,” he nods. “I mean you look at something like that Xiaomi [an up-and-coming Chinese brand], most people hadn’t heard of that phone until recently, and now they’re starting to be sold everywhere. They’re going to be the biggest phone in Europe in the next few years. But I’ve been selling these phones for the last two years.”

Christmas is obviously just around the corner. What does Jason think will be the big sellers this year?

“It’s still all about iPhones at the minute!” he smiles. “The iPhone 7 and 8 are the bigger sellers this year, because it suits people’s budgets, being between 350 to 450 euros. But we’ll have plenty of deals leading up to Christmas, all of which can be found on our website.”
